Raw Food for the Rest of Us

By Sami Grover IN Food & Health Jun 26 2009

News that the Nation's first state-licensed raw food culinary academy is opening in Oklahoma got me thinking. For some reason I've always found the zeal and dogma displayed by some members (by no means all!) of the raw food movement as decidedly off-putting—and yet their argument is hard to counter. As noted in our guide to Green Foods—the less you cook and process your ingredients, the more nutritious they are likely to be. + READ MORE

By Sara Novak IN Food & Health Jun 22 2009

But according to a study done at Texas A & M, the summer fruit may put you in the mood as well. The recent study found that watermelon can enhance the libido. + READ MORE

7 Easy Vegan Recipes to Get You Through Your First Week of Veganism

By Sara Novak IN Food & Health Jun 22 2009

It can be a bit intimidating to go vegan all at once. What do I eat? I mean I know what I can't eat, but how do I put it all into a recipe? How can I make sure that my vegan meals are balanced and that my family will eat them as well? More and more people are at least cutting back on their meat consumption because it vastly reduces your eco-impact. It's best to hit the farmers' market and indulge in the healthiest, freshest produce available, especially because a vegan diet is almost completely produce driven. + READ MORE

Veggie Chips

By Emma Alter IN Food & Health Jun 19 2009

Though Sara wrote about making potato chips a few weeks ago, I'm going to give you another way of making chips, and one with a slight variation: vegetable chips! Veggie chips are great because you get more than just potatoes: any solid vegetable can be made into a chip! I made it with beets, zucchini, turnip, and carrot, and sweet potato (and a regular potato, just to be sneaky!) but you could use anything: parsnips, pepper, and anything else that can be sliced on a mandolin. I stared longingly at my cauliflower (my absolute favourite vegetable), but somehow I thought it might not work as well. There are a lot of summer vegetables that work very well with this recipe, but it would also be great in the doldrums of winter when all you have to eat is parsnip: hey, why not fry it? + READ MORE

Sites We Love: We Love A Year of Slow Cooking for Easy, Delicious Recipes

By Blythe Copeland IN Food & Health Jun 15 2009

If you thought slow-cookers went out of style alongside avocado-colored appliances and shag carpets, you weren?t entirely wrong. But as busy schedules push aside home-cooked meals and healthy dinners, the Crock-Pot is a foolproof?and eco-friendly?solution to the fast-food-every-night problem: it uses minimal energy, which is good for your wallet and your carbon footprint; it makes a ton of food, so you always have leftovers; you can use less expensive cuts of meat; and you can throw in meat and vegetables raw (or even frozen) before heading off to work and come home to a mouth-watering meal. + READ MORE

Lighten Things Up With A Pacific Garden Salad

By Sara Novak IN Food & Health Jun 10 2009

As the weather in South Carolina warms, my appetite begins to diminish. I guess it?s just my body?s natural way of getting ready for bathing suit season. The heat always puts me in the mood for a light, crisp salad. I like the idea of incorporating tons of fruits into a savory salad like this one. I find that it?s always better to make a fresh salad at home (I?m still a little bitter about the mediocre and overpriced salad that I recently ordered at a restaurant in Charleston). + READ MORE

High-Carbon Foods = Acne-Causing Foods

By Sara Novak IN Fashion & Beauty Jun 9 2009

We all know that you are what you eat and your body's largest organ, your skin, is no exception. While most would love to think that pimples were just part of puberty, that certainly isn't the case. Geez, I'm nurturing a stress breakout right now. And according to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and discussed in this month's Natural Solutions, breakouts affect nearly 55 percent of women and 40 percent of men over 25. Dr. Richard Fried author of Healing Adult Acne recommends keeping track of what you eat in a food log and skipping the following foods in your plight to keep the pimples at bay. What's more: these food tend to have a higher carbon footprint than local, organic produce which is good for your skin. + READ MORE

Tempeh Nicoise Salad

By Sara Novak IN Food & Health May 15 2009

I often used to order Nicoise salads at restaurants. They?re generally healthy and delicious, and feature an interesting combination of flavors and textures. But recently, I?ve started to cut back on my seafood intake. First, I strayed from large fish like tuna because of concerns about mercury content and sustainability. Then, I just seemed to stray a little more. + READ MORE

The Planet Hates Soda and So Do Your Kidneys

By Sara Novak IN Food & Health May 14 2009

We all know that soda isn't the best thing for us. Josh wrote about how soda is a huge source of empty calories. You can drink a bottle of sweet-tasting soda and still have room to down a sandwich or something, and the soda will have as many calories as the entree. Not only is soda bad for you, it's bad for the planet considering that cans and plastic bottles are hugely wasteful. Even though they can be recycled, it takes energy to recycle them. + READ MORE
