How to Reuse Broken Mirrors

By Elizabeth Seward IN Home & Garden Sep 10 2008

Recently, my roommate broke the full-body mirror that was in her bedroom. Initially, she was going to just throw it away but I started thinking of ways in which we could use the shattered mirror instead. Most recycling organizations don't accept broken glass and that only leaves it one place to go: a landfill. You'll have a hard time trying to rid yourself of a shattered mirror by way of freecycling, so my advice is to just use your imagination. If you've got shattered glass/mirror around your house, here are some ways that I used our mirror that broke and maybe you can, too. + READ MORE

Score Used Instruments on Craigslist, Don't Buy New

By Elizabeth Seward IN Work & Connect Sep 9 2008

If there's one thing that musicians definitely love, it's their musical toys. Speaking from experience, I know that there is hardly anything more exciting than a new guitar. This excitement carries over to all instruments, really. The only problem with getting excited about new instruments, in my opinion, is that new instruments require new materials. They require new trees being chopped down, new materials being used (plastics, polishes, etc.), and more energy wasted on the over all production. Although it can be really tough to resist the urge to buy something brand new when you want an instrument, I encourage you to think twice. + READ MORE

How to Reuse Your Old Scrabble Board

By Elizabeth Seward IN Home & Garden Sep 9 2008

I recently started revamping my apartment. To be fair, I do this regularly, but I've been a whole lot more thorough this time around. As with any revamping process, you realize while in it that you've got a lot of things lying around your home that you may not need or ever use. I had totally forgotten that I had an old Scrabble set under one of my couches, for instance. I looked at it when I pulled it out, covered with dust, unsure of what to do with it. The idea of getting rid of it really pained me because it was the Scrabble board that my family grew up with. I remember countless games oriented around that one board when I was a child. + READ MORE

5 Reuses for: Orange Peels

By Team Planet Green IN Home & Garden Sep 8 2008

Growing up, my mother always came up with creative ways to reuse household objects - ones that my father would, in typical fashion, refer to as "all junk." Her biggest cause was probably saving orange peels from getting dumped in the trash. Thanks to her eco-friendly instincts back in the day, I can now think of close to 50 different uses for an orange peel, instead of just throwing it away. Here are five of my favorites. + READ MORE

Get a Fruit Dryer, Save Money, Eat Fresh

By Lynda Fassa IN Food & Health Sep 8 2008

Yeah, you can have it all. You can eat local, organic, cheap and huge variety. This awesome tip came from my super green friend Jan Maltby, who came up with this plan to reduce her throw-away of produce. She belongs to a CSA but, even with her three kids and generous-to-friends-and-neighbors sensibilities, she could never quite finish the huge bounty of the end of season tomatoes without ending up tossing a few for being squishy. What a waste. + READ MORE

Go bold with bright fencing that redirects the chill all winter long, or try some clever landscaping that also does extra duty as climate control during the summer. + READ MORE

How to Beat Cancer: 7 Easy Ways to Lower Your Risk

By Lynda Fassa IN Food & Health Sep 5 2008

A new book, Anticancer: A New Way of Life, comes out Sept. 8th. It sounds sort of like a scary movie from the '70's, like The Omen, and the cancer part alone might be enough to put me off buying the book, since I ain't got it...(as far as my last mammogram says anyway). What I mean is, I normally would not buy a book on cancer, or even on avoiding cancer, because, well I just don't plan on getting it. But many of us will. In fact 25% of us in the US will die from cancer. + READ MORE

Make Your Own Rain Sticks: Decorate and Reuse at Same Time

By Elizabeth Seward IN Home & Garden Sep 3 2008

Rain sticks don't have to be just for children. In fact, they are really great additions to any home if done the right way. The best part? They can be made completely from things around your home. Rain sticks are a great way to make use of the loose items in your junk drawers, not to mention paper towel/toilet paper tubes. Since they're so wonderfully crafted and sold in many gift stores, many adults write off homemade rain sticks as a project just for kids. I beg to differ! Here's what I did for a rain stick once that still eloquently decorates my home-you can do it, too! + READ MORE

Homemade Eco Floor Cleaner - Make It

By Elizabeth Seward IN Home & Garden Aug 29 2008

I was looking at my once-shiny-and-new hardwood floors in my home the other day thinking about how badly I needed to clean them. It was, after all, long over due. The only apprehension I was really having was the gross feeling I had about using chemicals to that degree so close to the air I breathe. Yes, my floors needed to be seriously and deeply cleaned. However, I had to think of a new way to clean my floors. And so I did. + READ MORE

Support Your Local Quarry

By Josh Peterson IN Travel & Outdoors Aug 29 2008

Quarries get a bad rap. In the movies, mobsters are always throwing dead bodies into them. Sometimes people drown there. Teens are always getting busted for underage drinking at the quarry. The quarry is not a thing of beauty. It's a big desolate hole, located somewhere near the edge of town. No one goes to the quarry to marvel at it?s beauty. There are no Pulitzer Prize-winning photos called "Dusk Falls at the Quarry." + READ MORE
