Personally, it's been a revelation for me because I've never had so many sprouts on hand at once. When I buy them once every week or two I usually just do my pan fry and everyone is happy. This has forced me into thinking of other ways to serve them. They come in all colours, shapes and sizes and many don't look like tomatoes at all. Some of them are beautiful to look at and some of them are downright homely, but they have amazing flavours. Some of them are so sweet you can pop them in your mouth as though they were strawberries. My daughter went in my stead and blithely announced that unless I had a specific request, she was only going to buy what she liked. It was fine, but I wanted to be sure to be at the Saturday market right when it opened to pick up anything I might have missed on Thursday. His booth is small and he doesn't sell a lot of things each week, but there's always a new type of green leafy vegetable. He sees me coming now and is ready to point out the interesting thing to try. It's a pretty strong tasting vegetable, but I'm not sure that's the reason he doesn't like it. My mother-in-law is generally quite a good cook, but her weakness seems to be vegetables. Like many women of her generation (including my own mother) she cooks vegetables for a very long time, and the result is the occasional dish of mushy cauliflower. Sometimes it pays to try a vegetable again, for that reason alone. Cauliflower falls into the category of vegetables he will eat, but he'd rather not. It is the most amazing chartreuse color and unlike hybrids like broccoflower and orange and purple cauliflower, it is a species unto itself. It demands photographing as much as cooking, and I can pretty much guarantee that it is the only vegetable you'll ever eat that is a fractal. I have persevered over the last couple of years, but my family always looks askance when I come home with them. This year I finally got it right, perhaps because I actually searched out a recipe to make them instead of just trying to make something up. They don't last more than a week or two at the farmers' market, so now is the time to get them. You can keep your eyes open for squash blossoms later in the season. In Canada, the word saskatoon is derived from the Cree language, but I believe the fruit is more commonly known as serviceberry in the United States. It's appearance is similar to the blueberry, but it is actually a pome, more closely related to the apple. It was one of those vegetables that I'd always seen at the grocery store, but didn't buy because I didn't know what to do with it. I had read about how beneficial kale was, along with other dark green, leafy vegetables so I bought some and started experimenting. It turns out to be quite versatile and I've used it in soups, stews or sometimes just wilting it in some olive oil and garlic.
