In fact, having more than the standard issue of children gives you the reputation of being a bit eccentric anyway, so the addition of something as on the edge as dumpster diving is generally just seen as one more act of random weirdness. If you're a student or live in a college town, you know that soon there will be a mass exodus as students move from the dorms/student housing and on to summer. Once finals are done, it's summer internships, jobs at the beach and maybe even crash with mom and dad. But before you move on to sunnier pastures, think about where your stuff will go when after you move from your dorm. Even if you've been subletting a house off-campus, chances are you can't take all your stuff home with you. But that's no reason to send it packing to the landfill. Check out these resources for reusing or recycling your stuff. It's that time of year again! This sampling idea is catching on and reminded me of Abbie Hoffman's classic tome, Steal This Book, a book that's now a very un-hip 38 years old. Considered radically beyond the pale at the time of its release, some of Hoffman's advice appears somewhat quaint when viewed through the jaded prism of the twenty-first century. It is a short step from gleaning to today's dumpster diving, or skip-dipping as it is called in the UK and Australia where dumpsters are known as skips. And there is even a whole sub-culture of people who practice it: Freegans. Having been a poor college student for almost my entire adult life, I have a few tricks up my sleeve when it comes to making extra money without actually having to get a job. I've used all but one of these methods to make extra money, so I'll vouch for their validity. As an added bonus, these activities are also ecologically friendly. The recession is just awful. I had this big acetylene torch, and I would go around the farm, cutting up antiquated and rusted farm equipment and loading it onto a trailer. The farm was old and huge, and we'd pull a few tons of metal out of there every week. The farmer sold this metal for scrap, and he made enough money to pay me and still profit off his treasure trove of metal. I used to cut scrap metal for a farmer.
