When I traveled to Centro Ecologico Sian Ka'an (CESiaK), an eco-friendly beach resort in Mexico's Mayan Riviera, on vacation in August (of which all of the juicy details can be found here), it wasn't intended as business. That vacation, I left my yoga mat practice back in Brooklyn and set out for sun, sand and ceviche (responsibly caught, of course.) In my other life I'm a yoga instructor. You spend wads of cash trying to get a “natural” spray tan glow—the more expensive, the more seemingly “natural.” You dedicate hours out of your day at the local hair salon trying to transform your locks from dull and mousy to sun-kissed and highlighted. Since Mother Nature has proven herself to be the most direct (and least expensive) route to beauty, why do we continue to try and outdo her with chemically concocted copy-cats that pale in comparison? While the location might be ideal, some developers ignore the impact that their sprawling showpieces plopped on the shore or perched on a cliff have on the environment. The pretty picture can in fact create massive waste runoff, landslides, pollution, introducing foreign materials that can throw off nature's harmony, disturbing (and even unknowingly killing) the fragile flora, fauna, and land and sea life.
