10 Cooling Yogic Tips for Summer Health & Low Stress

Have you ever noticed how the heat tends to bring out the not-so-best in people? I have, as recent as a subway ride earlier this week. Packed in like sardines in a tin can, I observed a car of New Yorkers impatiently grumble, jumble and let out sighs of misery, which if the collective train had a subtitle would have read, "Get me out. It's @#$%*&# hot!"

I could have let the ride get the better half of me; but, I opted for the yogin's path instead practicing contentment. This was a long-awaited summer after all. I also began jotting down a list of things that help keep me keep me cool -- in mind and body -- amidst a hot mess of chaos.

1. Stick with a yoga practice--or start one.

Zero swimsuits and trunks on the other are even greener -- perhaps to some, even hotter -- with production energy, natural resources, and fabric out of the picture. Plus, as many would argue, what's more natural than reclaiming our birthday suit in which we arrived to this planet and getting down with Mother Nature?

If the idea of baring all makes you blush or has you thinking "hell no!", I felt the same -- especially having been raised in the States where it sometimes feels like showing one's skin is akin to committing a sin. Then I braved a day trip to Gunnison Beach, Sandy Hook, NJ -- ranked at #8 on the list -- and not only relished the care... Read the full story on Planet Green

Eco-Tourism 2.0: Vacation Alongside Your Favorite Wild Animals

Sea turtles, Tigers and Penguins Oh My!
Here's a new mode of travel that will please animal-lovers, kids, conservationists and armchair conservationists (like myself) alike: it's appropriately called conservation travel. And it's carving its deserved place in the tourism landscape, providing a refreshing alternative to beach-y, all-inclusive packages and other Plain Jane, been-there, done-that trips.

See the Wild with SEEtheWILD.org
With a new online travel purveyor like SEEtheWILD.org, travelers can truly escape their regular routine, and surround themselves with the wild animal species they love.

Could You Go Zero-Technology for 24-hours? Join the Unplug Challenge!

God said, “On the seventh day thou shalt rest.” The meaning behind it was simple: Take a break. Call a timeout. Find some balance. Recharge. Somewhere along the line, however, this mantra for living faded from modern consciousness.

Facebook, Twitter and E-Mails, Oh My!
God or no god, it's safe to say a Facebook-free day, disconnected from e-mails, web searches, business calls, "I'm-running-late" calls, and commute-time twitter updates are rare to come by. On a tight budget, a classically cheap motel was chosen. That night in Tennessee, the sheets were so pill-y and dotted with mysterious stains, I remember refusing to slide even just one leg under cover.
The 4-Hour Staycation: Crazy Short, Insanely Refreshing

I know that what I'm about to say is going to sound entirely spoiled because well, it is. For the past three years I've managed to make a warm winter escape by both work (hosting yoga retreats or writing) and pleasure -- from Brazil to Mexico. For a sun-needy creature and wanderlust like me, the voyages came at perfect timing-- smack dab mid-January or February, breaking up the drudgery of Brooklyn's drab gray sky, and ice-crusted cement. I'd arrive back in my urban abode, refreshed with memories of white-sand beaches, laid-back days and sun-kissed with a glow that re-charged my batteries and left me uplifted until spring's arrival.

Without work taking me away somewhere toasty and tropical, an... Read the full story on Planet Green

Like we highlight individuals and organizations making a positive difference, the brother-sister team uses the power of video webisodes to do the same, only focusing their lens on youth.

The name of their project is appropriately dubbed Journey of Action. If you’re currently in LA, you could spot Kassidy and Ryan’s Journey of Action bus, which is currently making its 5th stop in what is a Pan American Highway adventure. With stops between Alaska and Argentina to document all things cool in environment, education, human and civil rights, the global economy, poverty, global health, and politics.

This Yogini's Healthy Holiday Eco-Wish List (Hint, Hint)

Last year, I shared a bit of humor from my little cousin, who unabashedly shared his Christmas gift list totaling over $1,000 in 11-year-old boy dream loot. As a twenty-something year old adult practicing the yogic (and very green) art of needing little, creating a wish list seemed preposterous. After a warming breakfast (it's chilly here in New York City!), I bundled up and made my way down to my district vote center to try out the new bubble vote system.
Yogins, Join a 350.org Work Party this 10.10.10

On the mat, a Hatha yoga practice combined with a healthy diet and rest, can lend to a sound, sustainable body. When coupled with the ancient, mental trainings we can transform the exercise into something beyond our bodily experience. It can actually inspire us to extend our practice of personal wellness to global wellness and awareness.

That's the encouragement I like offering at my Park Slope, Brooklyn yoga studio. If a practitioner feels ready to take their practice off of the mat into their community, there are so many opportunities and I make sure to share them.

Making Travel Meaningful, Part 2: Farmers Markets & Free Yoga in Flagstaff

One of best things about vacationing at a friend’s home is getting a great taste of their "slice of life" as a local. In this case, I got to live like my girl Biz, a Flagstaff resident living a 10-minute walk away from downtown.
Making Travel Meaningful: My Grand, Green Southwest Adventure (Part 1)

This summer, I’ve got the travel bug. OK, I have it all the time. And it’s not something I’m proud of. (Our airplanes aren’t running on alternatives to petro yet!)

So the very few times (and I am proud of this!) I commit the eco-sinful deed of traveling far via jet, I at least like to make it meaningful; a trip that’ll educate, inspire, shake me up a little, provide time for self-reflection, and create lasting memories. Lucky for me and Mother Earth, these trips are often low-impact, low-cost, community-centric and splashed with an appreciation for nature.

Like my recent travels to Flagstaff, Arizona. Despite the 4,000+ miles logged via airplane, I used Continental Airlines,... Read the full story on Planet Green

Practice Shinrin-yoku or Forest Bathing

“Forest bathing” might sound like something reserved for dirty hippies. (I joke!)

Fear not. According to the New York Times, “Forest bathing” or “Shinrin-yoku” is simply the act of visiting nature parks for therapeutic effects and was given this fancy name by fans and followers in Japan.

We all know that spending time outdoors brings a whole host of healthy benefits, including stress management.
