Book is a Hitchhiker's Guide to America

If you're familiar with the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you may want to pick up "Redwood to Deadwood," a book by Colin Flaherty about hitchhiking across America. Hitchhiking? In this day and age? And living to tell about it? Now that's an adventure.

That may be the cynical Detroiter in me (I grew up down there). Or maybe I've seen too many hitchhiker horror movies.

According to author from Wilmington, Delaware:

Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays. However you celebrate during December, you don't need to fly to do it. Think about it. No airports. No delays, or overpriced foods, or announcements that you can't quite make out, or sitting next to someone you'd rather not. How about getting stuck with the middle seat? Convinced? Try these five green holiday trends on for size, via Greentraveller, with five no-fly holiday ideas.

The list, published recently on the Reuters Business Traveller site, puts an emphasis on the carbon emissions you'll keep out of the atmosphere.
Meet Stanley Selengut, the Father of Sustainable Resort Development

Sustainable resort development doesn't have to be an oxymoron. Meet Stanley Selengut, who created Maho Bay Camps, a 114-unit campground on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, in 1976. It was built to be an economically viable and environmentally friendly camp, compatible with National Park mandates. It's now one of the most profitable businesses on the island. And as with any good story, there's more.

Maho Bay was built by locals on hand-dug footings to minimize impacts to the land. How refreshing, and quieter than heavy machinery. Beep beep beep.

Certified Green: Top 10 Loony Travel Destinations

Is Space Tourism a Bust?

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic spaceline is still in the works. Still. As some potential passengers jump ship. The latest to give up his ticket is venture capitalist Alan Walton. If you have an extra $200,000, now's your chance to snatch it up.

It seems that even the 1%ers (shameless Occupy Wall Street reference) are being careful about how they spend their dollars these days, based on a report at physorg.com. Walton was among the first folks to sign up for this spaceflight, which involves being sent on a suborbital trip, 60-some miles high, for a feeling of weightlessness (and a potential awesome new Facebook prof... Read the full story on Planet Green

Ben Sollee, Sans Van, is Pedaling His Brand of Folk Music

You may recall a post earlier this year on plans by soulful folk musician Ben Sollee to embark on a second, two-wheeled tour. That is, a tour on a bike, towing a cello (since he's a cellist). I remarked back then that he'd have to park his "clunky old van" after a road show, and pedal his music for a while. Well, the tour dates have now been announced. And just in time, because his van broke down.

To refresh, Ben is from Kentucky, his newest CD is "Inclusions," and his bicycle trek is officially called the "2011 Ditch the Van Tour."
What's That Noise? Play a Saw, Save a Tree

Have you saw, I mean, seen the latest trend in music? Actually, the proper verb is saw. And maybe it's not a trend. But if you thought saw-playing died with Jackyl's "The Lumberjack," you're wrong. It's still going on, sans chainsaws that run with two-stroke engines. Astoria, New York, recently hosted the ninth annual NYC Musical Saw Festival. People came from all over to play music using saws. And people came to listen. Boy, does this music sound weird. There's no way to describe it, except maybe "Wooo ooooo."

If you're making plans for 2012, you might want to consider the 10th annual festival. It's bound to have even more teeth than last year. Teeth, like you use on a saw to cut wood.
They Draw & Travel Features Art, Adventure & Maps

When you're packing for a trip, it helps to have a list. One more thing you might want to add, besides clothes and a camera, are art supplies.
Brother, Can You Spare 1% for the Planet?

How much do you set aside for helping the planet, as in living more sustainably? Do you spend more for organic food, offset your carbon emissions or maybe even ride a bike (that counts, bikes aren't free). There are a number of businesses that donate at least 1% of their sales to support about 2,600 environmental organizations around the world. And that number just grew by one, as in Outside Online, an outdoor publication. Does that sound funny? An online outdoor mag called Outside?

Make Tracks for Traincations, the Newest Travel Trend

You've heard of vacations and staycations. What about Traincations? It's what it sounds like, taking a break from work and at-home hassles via the rails. According to some experts, it's becoming the next big travel trend.

As most folks who have flown on commercial airlines can attest, flying is no fun anymore. Long waits and delays, cramped seats, bland snacks.

Driving can be fun, but you're supposed to pay attention to the road, not the countryside.

Trains can be more inviting than planes and automobiles, with more room, food cars, and places to plug in your laptop. Being a low-carbon form of travel doesn't hurt either.

Walnuts are Crunchy Drugs, FDA says

The other night, my wife made drugs for dinner. Actually, the dish was walnut garlic linguine, made with a recipe clipped from a magazine in 1996. It seems that, even back then, walnuts were prized for being delicious. They're also pretty healthy. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers at least one brand of walnuts to be a new drug. Finally, I'd say.

How to Take an Extended Vacation, Around the World, in Style

This could be called "An Introduction to Digital Nomad Living." It's one of those ideas you come across on StumbleUpon. A family of three from Santa Cruz, California (at one time, anyway) is spreading the message. They've found that they can travel the world and "live large" for less than living at home. How is this possible?

This lifestyle also is called extended travel.

Some tips: Get a cheaper flight by staying longer and going off-season, and book a rental rather than a hotel. Cook at your new temporary home, rather than eating out every night. For those meals out, do lunch, which is cheaper than dinner anyway.

Father/Son Team Traveling from NYC to Portland in 1,000 MPG Vehicle

Nash Hoover is 12, and like (too) many kids, he turns on a light when he enters a room, but doesn't turn it off when he leaves. It's only one bulb, after all (multiplied by rooms of bulbs in homes across the USA). Nash is learning, though. He and his dad, an inventor and journalist named Pierce Hoover, began a journey on June 1 across the USA. All 4,000 or so miles of it. And they're using an amazing hybrid vehicle that is expected to make the trip on only a light bulb's worth of energy per day.

That translates to 1,000 miles per gallon. Take that, gas hogs and oil barons. This hybrid vehicle is human-electric, and is traveling from New York to Oregon.

Hoover managed to turn most every father's problem (turn off the lights, kids) into a story pitch and a cross-country ride. The journey i... Read the full story on Planet Green

Wi-Fi Could Go Bye-Bye With Climate Change

If you don't like being tethered to an office chair, then you've likely learned to appreciate wi-fi. Ah, the freedom. Work at the coffee shop. Or on the beach. With freedom, however, comes responsibility, right? Like taking responsibility for our carbon emissions, both personal, national and international.

If this sounds too preachy, and you're tired of the climate change alarms, just consider one more: A warming planet egged on by human-related emissions of greenhouse gases could affect wi-fi signals.

So much for traveling and working from the road or a more relaxing place if this prediction comes to pass.
Is Your School on the List of the 311 Greenest Colleges?

So I'm now the holder of a Master of Arts degree in Environmental Studies with a Concentration in Sustainable Development and Policy. How does that roll off the tongue? It took me four years, taking classes on the side. Over the weekend, I visited the campus of the University of Illinois-Springfield for the first time. How is this possible?

The classes that I took were virtual, at a university that has about 5,000 students, 25% of which take classes online. Did I choose the UIS Environmental Studies program for its convenient green-ness, so I wouldn't have to spend every weekend or several weeknights driving to classes? Yes. I also chose the program because it was accredited, and offered <a href="htt... Read the full story on Planet Green

Save Russia's Strange, Beautiful, Endangered Saiga Antelope (Photos)

These are Saiga Antelope. They're known for buggy eyes and big snouts ... and for being one of the fastest-declining mammal species on Earth.

Or maybe they're relatively unknown outside of Russia. The Saiga Conservation Alliance aims to make these creatures the poster children of conservation efforts, before the animals are gone.

The alliance is offering 10-day eco-tours of Southern Russia to raise money for conservation of the species.

Biking with a Cello? Ben Sollee Ditches the Van

Kentucky musician Ben Sollee is going back on the road. That doesn't mean tour buses or even a step down, to a clunky old van. Ben is going on a bike. And he's a cellist. Should he have chosen a guitar (or just been a singer with a microphone)? This guy does things the hard way, apparently. Like his latest video for "Close To You," a handmade effort filmed in one take with the help of more than 80 volunteers. Which is weirder, the bike, the cello, the video? Look and listen.

Ben's 2011 Ditch the Van Tour will head out later this summer, when he and his band stop driving and flying and start biking their way from show to show.

Let the flame wars begin. I still have friends who are Apple nuts. I used to be one. I moved to a PC years ago. I was tired of being a pioneer. And tired of hearing "the Mac version will be released soon." PCs cost less, they're more widely used, etc.

Of course, not everyone agrees on those undeniable points. And I still use an iPhone and an iPad (and Pages doesn't beat Word, by the way).

What's On Your Must-See List? The Northern Lights Top Recent Poll

You work hard, and you want your vacation to be special. In their time away, most folks in a recent survey would rather see what's in the sky than what's on the ground. The Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights won out against spots like Machu Picchu. Nightlife beats wildlife, in other words.

The survey comes from The Adventure Company, and 8,000 U.K. travellers were polled.
Making Conservation as Common as McDonald's

Ronald McDonald is on his way out, you may have heard. It's high time that a corporation stopped using a clown to market to kids, right? That doesn't mean my kids still don't ask for McDonald's, and that I don't cave in once in a while. What if, however, true green practices and conservation were as common as McDonald's? The burger (and increasingly gourmet coffee) chain is starting to construct more energy efficient, LEED-certified buildings.

Does this make McDonald's the next green giant?
Reality Check: 101 Ways to Travel Without a Gas-Powered Car

Have you seen the price of gas lately? Of course, $4 a gallon in the U.S. is cheap compared to what people in other countries have been paying for years. Either way, the cost can make you think twice about taking a trip. Unless you're Boaz Frankel. This eco-adventurer traveled 12,000 miles across America using everything BUT a gas-powered automobile.

Let's see. How did he come up with 101? Some of the different modes he chose include a pedal-powered kayak, a camel, a couch bike, a secret Senate subway, a paraglider, a hot air balloon, a crop duster, a pneumatic pogo stick, a mechanical walking rickshaw, a dog sled, and an electric motorized cooler.

'Rent Green' for a Getaway, or a Test Drive

So you want to upgrade the house, or the car. Using less energy can cost you more money up front, although the idea is that the savings over time will pay you back ... and then some. What about renting? Traditionally, that's a sucker's bet. You should buy, as in a home. Or maybe that advice is from a long time ago, when people used to make money on the real estate market. Here's a way to find out what efficiency and technology is all about, however, without forking over the cash right away: Renting green.

This may be something to think about the next time you plan your adventure (like right now). I've done vacation rentals with the family, including one fabulous cabin in the woods that sported a kennel for the dog. Vacation Rentals by Owner is a super r... Read the full story on Planet Green

16-Year-Old Skis to North Pole, and Keeps on Going

What did you accomplish by the time you were 16? What have you accomplished so far? A 16-year-old named Parker Liautaud, from London, just returned from a trip to the North Pole. He did it on skis, in four days. Was it just to update his picture on Facebook? Not entirely, although that is a bonus. He skiied for 112 kilometers (almost 70 miles) as an ambassador for One Young World, in an effort to inspire other young folks to take up a cause.

Parker, along with teammate Doug Stoup, finished the journey one week ahead of schedule. Parker's journey was in support of a resolution from One Young World, an international forum for youth leadership.
How About a Free Trip for Turning Your Home into a Billboard?

This idea from the Boing Boing people gives me another. The gist is, a California company called Adzookie is offering to pay your mortgage if you're willing to let them turn your home into a giant billboard. No homes have been selected as of this writing, but what would you be willing to hawk to help pay the bills? This brings a new meaning to the "for sale" in the front yard.

What about ads on your home that give you some time away, as in a free adventure trip/vacation? After all, your neighbors may not be too happy about the ad anyway.

Some travel organizations that may want to consider this, from our Planet Green archives:

Outdoor Adventure: Take Your Kid(s) Snorkeling

I've been waiting to write this post, since a return from the Dominican Republic for some Spring Break relaxation and family bonding. Of course, I love my family, but sometimes the kids can be a handful. Like my 9-year-old daughter, who's sweet and wonderful, but can make your blood boil depending on the day. OK, but how to cool hot tempers? Snorkeling, I've found.

Snorkeling is a perfect way to spend an afternoon, especially in a spot like Punta Cana. You're in a refreshing place, breathing carefully through a tube, peering at what you normally can't see --- what's normally out of sight, and out of mind for many.
