Earlier this year, an Australian design for a staircase with drawers was very popular on Web sites and in magazines, including a vigorous debate about the safety of such an idea, primarily about what would happen if someone left a drawer open.
Canadian Home Workshop has produced detailed instructions on how to do this yourself if you have carpentry skills. A note of caution: In some mass-produced stairs, the riser acts as a stiffener for the tread above, and is structurally part of the stair, rather than just a filler.
