Urban gardening can be difficult. There's the issue of choosing where to plant, what to plant, how to plant it, and how to do it all in the greenest way. But the end result is absolutely worth the effort. You might even find your garden becomes a wildlife sanctuary in a urban setting. We're gathering up some helpful tips so that you can have an organic garden oasis in your urban area, without having to scrounge around for information.

Composting

One of the first places to start with gardening is creating a great compost so your plants can flourish. We have lots of advice for composting, including building a compost box for your apartment or a small one for an outdoor space, and how to get started in composting.

Getting Started Planting

Once you have your soil, you're ready to plant! You might find you want to take a class on gardening to get the basics. But you don't have to—we have loads of tips here on Planet Green. From planting spring bulbs and starting seedlings, to heirloom plants, back yard pest control and making your supplies last, we've got you covered on how to go green in the garden.

Alternatives to Back Yards

If you don't have a yard in which to put a garden, don't worry—there are lots of alternatives, including community gardens, guerrilla gardening and, one of the easiest solutions, container gardening.

Container gardens are a great way to garden while living in the city, were a plot of dirt might be hard to find. Planet Green has a ton of resources for you. Learn where to put your container garden, creative ideas for what to use for containers, how to get free soil and plants, and even how to efficiently water your containers.

Gardening in the city might seem difficult at first, but once you get the swing of it, you'll feel just like you're living on a farm, with fresh flowers, vegetables, and vibrant greenery all around you.
