Extolling the Virtues of Triple Pane Windows

Renovation Nation features various energy-saving gadgets. One of those gadgets is the triple pane window. This new window is much like the regular window that your parents used, but it has three panes instead of one or two. I know. I know. It sounds like the pipe dream of an insane genius, but I assure you that the science behind it is far from mad.

The triple pane window is a marvel of window technology. Not only can it be used for simple outside-viewing, but it saves energy in a variety of creative and surprising ways.

A triple pane window has more surface area than a lesser paned window. Triple panes have six surfaces. That's as many surfaces as the common, household cube. The surfaces absorb both cold and heat, saving energy.

The spaces between the panes are also a factor. The spaces absorb energy, and they can be filled with krypton, an inert noble gas. Krypton in your windows will reduce the amount of energy that escapes through the glass. It also reduces noise and keeps Superman at bay.

Some triple pane windows have a low e-coating. This means that a small amount of reflective metal has been added to the window's glaze. This does not disrupt bird-feeder viewing or the afternoon squirrel watch. The metal reflects heat and light and adds to the insulation of the home.

All those panes might keep lazy cat burglars from smashing your window and stealing your brooch. That's the little-known benefit of triple pane windows.

The only downside is the cost. Like a lot of green innovations, however, these costs are usually reclaimed over time through energy savings.

If your windows don't have a lot of panes or are shoddy, it might be time to think about an upgrade. Triple your pleasure with panes!
