From the bizarre to the solemn, there are all sorts of monthly, weekly and daily observances. There are the national holidays such as Veterans Day, and you might have heard of Pirate Day, but did you know there's a day devoted to swapping seeds?

National Seed Swap Day falls on Jan. 31 each year, and though it might seem like an outdated day observed by farmers, there are plenty of reasons why you should get in on the action.

Whether you love tending to flowers in the garden or have a vegetable patch in your yard, seed swapping is a fantastic idea. Many of us routinely plant those flowers and foods we know well, but your friends or neighbors may grow a plant you've never heard of -- one that you might come to cherish. By swapping seeds, you'll discover new flowers or try new foods, such as usual heirloom varieties, plus you'll help improve the biodiversity in your garden, which is always a good thing.

If you like the idea of a seed swap, consider hosting an event at your home this Sunday. Invite friends and neighbors, asking everyone to bring along their favorite seeds. Provide little envelopes (you can make them with scrap paper even), and encourage your guests to share gardening tips and tricks. Could there be a better way to spend a cold winter afternoon?

To find other events and gardeners to swap with, check out Seed Swaps, Blossom Swap, and the National Gardeners Association. Happy swapping!
