On Greenovate, Evan and Amanda Gregorio want to show their two children how important it is to be green. They set out to renovate their Van Nuys, California home with tons of eco-friendly features. One element of the project is the construction of an 820 square foot addition made from structural insulated panels (SIPs). Learn about SIPs and why you should incorporate them into your next home renovation plan.

Can't wait to construct a new wing on your little mansion? Consider using structural insulated panels for the project and you will not only be green, you’ll be giddy about the results. SIPs are fantastic alternatives to using traditional construction materials for several reasons.

  1. The plastic foam core provides insulation within the board structure. This means maximum energy efficiency.
  2. Unlike traditional building materials of this type, SIPs are produced with only a small amount of petroleum.
  3. SIPs are prefabricated. As such, job site waste is dramatically reduced.
  4. Many SIP manufacturers recycle scraps to make other products.
  5. SIPs are constructed to minimize humidity and provide better air quality for the interior of the structure.

If you're sold on SIPs and want to start investigating them as an option for your renovation or construction project, contact the Structural Insulated Panel Association. This organization can direct you to a contractor in your area who is qualified to build SIP structures. Remember the more you know, the greener you can go!
