Steve Thomas is the host of Planet Green's Renovation Nation, a program that focuses on making green renovations to homes across the country. In his regular column on PlanetGreen.com, Steve goes behind the scenes of the show and offers additional tips and insight on green renovation.

On a personal note, building the railing in the video was a lot of fun. We fabricated the whole thing and had a blast. The guys who worked on this project were cool, and the railing was great.

All the railing features were bought from the recycling company that you'll see in the clip. They recycle just about everything there. If you're coming in to buy supplies and you are doing something cool with them, they'll give you an additional discount, which is great.

The railing is made from salvaged steel items. Most steel is recycled and recyclable. Old steel is melted down and turned into new steel.

This railing is a really good example of how you can take found objects and do something really interesting with them. It makes you think in a different way about junk. What makes that railing unique is the "good junk" that it's built from.
