Rather than use tiny yet lethal pieces of metal to secure paper, the staple-free stapler punches small flaps and bends them to bind the pages together.
The staple-free stapler certainly has its downsides: Don't expect to be able to fasten more than a few sheets of paper, for one. Still, you never have to scramble for refill staples-and, unless you try very, very hard, you're unlikely to end up with a bloody appendage.
