Don't fall for tourist traps

One reader of The Simple Dollar has a fuss-free solution for dealing with souvenirs-he doesn't buy them. In a comment on the blog, he says:

Souvenirs are synonymous with schlock in my mind. I can return from a trip with the memory card in my digital camera full of pictures and have more than enough to remember the trip by. I don't need a physical item to remind me of somewhere I've been; my memory is good enough.

Skip the tacky tourist shack with its glittering array of souvenir tchotchkes and T-shirts that were probably made in China. If bringing home gifts is expected-or you're loathe to return empty-handed-choose something that is both local (for real) and consumable, such as maple syrup from Vermont or saltwater taffy from San Francisco. Not only will you save some coin, but you'll also have one less snow globe to dust.
