READ MORE ABOUT:
AltUse.com has created the world's largest online collection of alternative use ideas for commercial products. Have things in your house you don't want to throw away? AltUse can probably help you find new life for just about all of them—and the site invites user-generated content, so if you don't find the product you're looking for, you can submit it yourself. (After finding an AltUse for it first, of course.)
The founders of the site seek to challenge "the notion of marketing products for one specific purpose," effectively combatting climate change by reducing consumption (and emissions), slowing the stream of goods to already overcrowded landfills—and saving people money, all at the same time. It's a Wiki-style site that uses a proprietary algorithm to help you search either by product—baking soda, chocolate, pantyhose—or by need—look up burn and you'll get remedies for problems from sunburn to heartburn.
Benjamin Goldfarb, a co-founder of the site, is a former interactive marketing guru for Nestle, and launched sites you might recognize from PowerBar to CoffeeMate. He's now using his technology trend-spotting abilities, and experience in reducing his own carbon footprint (he rides mass transit in LA and his college thesis focused on using corporate credits for waste treatment), to enable people to reduce their own waste.
Have takeout containers you don't want to throw away? AltUse has suggestions from using it in art to gardening projects to mechanical repairs. Need a hangover cure? AltUse has several. It'll also help you find new ways to use old cardboard, including a weed-free walkway.
AltUse has 21 categories, from Beauty to Pet Care to Business and Finance, so you're sure to find an alternative use for just about any item in your life. Start AltUsing your would-be or could-be trash into products you need, and now don't have to buy, today!
