For diaper covers on the cheap, sew your own using unwanted fabrics you're likely to already have lying around the house. The owner of Boise Cloth Diapers, who has stitched diaper wraps from woolens she felted in the washing machine for extra thickness and durability, has included instructions on her Web site at no charge.

If you're looking for the full diaper setup, including a soaker pad, check out Dianna's pictorial directions. For fancier versions with convertible absorbency inserts, side-snap styles, and tips for embellishments (man, these are not your older siblings' nappies!)-as well as instructions for getting two soakers and a pair of pants out of one wool sweater-purchase one of Fern & Faerie's sewing patterns (from $8).

Tip: Learn more about the disposable-versus-reusable-diaper debate, flushable diapers, and diaper-free babies, over at TreeHugger.
