In the cornfields of Michigan, a hungry Tyrannosaurus Rex has been raising money and food for the hungry. "Scrappy the Dinosaur" is a 22-foot sculpture, created by artist Rob Lefief, that has been adorning the entrance of the Depner Farms corn maze for months. Now, the farm is auctioning Scrappy for fun and charity.

Scrappy is no ordinary Tyrannosaurus Rex. Constructed entirely from recycled farm equipment, the metal dinosaur is a towering homage to reuse culture and artistic upcycling. A combination of parts from farm cultivators, harrows, plows, bean rodders, and an old combine were carefully selected for their similarities to the actual bones of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton.

With an appraised value between $20,000 and $30,000, Scrappy is more of an investment than your typical lawn ornament. However, Scrappy is not like those lawn gnomes and pink flamingoes cluttering the yards of suburbia. This Tyrannosaurus Rex is a unique piece of art, one that has drawn people to Depner Farms. Plus, half of the sale will be donated to the charity of the buyer's choice.

Even so, Scrappy is out of the price range of most people, especially during a time of economic recovery. Hopefully, whoever purchases the upcycled Tyrannosaurus Rex will keep him on public display.

Reuse Like a Tyrannosaurus Rex

If you can't round up the bones to buy Scrappy, you can at least glean a bit of inspiration from him. Artist Rob Lefief saw art in rusting farm equipment to create his incredible dino-sculpture. We can all do the same thing, albeit on a smaller scale.
