We have noticed a couple of articles about square-drive screws on websites recently, and learned that there is a Web site, McFeely's, devoted to providing them to Americans.

This is, for any do-it-yourselfer or carpenter, great news. Square-drive screws were invented by Canadian Peter Robertson in 1908, after he hurt his hand when a screwdriver slipped from a standard slot. It took off like mad, speeding up production and reducing product damage. It was great for the Robertson company; everyone in Canada owns at least two and possibly four of their colour-coded drivers. My father used to build transport trailers with them, and people from around the world would write, trying to get hold of the drivers and screws that worked so well-and fix their trailer, my father would throw one in but they were taken immediately.

Henry Ford tried them out, and found that he could save two hours of assembly time per car. He tried to license them from Robertson to have a manufacturing advantage, but Robertson wanted to maintain his control. So Ford went to some guy named Phillips, and the rest is history. ::Mysteries of Canada and ::Robertson
