A heckuva lot of tires are produced each year in the United States-as much as 299 million tires in 2005 alone, according the Rubber Manufacturer's Association. While 82 percent of scrap tires are are consumed by end-use markets such as tire-derived fuel, civil engineering, and ground-rubber applications, you can still help keep a tire or two out of landfill by turning it into a swing, a sandbox, or even a pair of jaunty, Teva-style sandals.
To make your sandals, you'll need just a few basics: An old tire (preferably from a truck), a good utility knife, and some nylon harness strapping. Amazingly, no stitching or gluing is required, thanks to four side "tabs" you cut out.
If that's too much work for you, you can also buy a pair, ready-made, from the same site, or from EcoSandals, a non-profit importer and reseller of sandals made by a co-op in Nairobi, Kenya. ::Hollowtop
