Four Tips For Buying Mom Eco-Friendly Roses

Mother's Day is just around the bend, so for all you gift-giving procrastinators out there, how about showing mom you care with a bouquet of fresh roses? Take it from our very own Lynda Fassa--moms love flowers!  They're classic, elegant and best of all-biodegradable. That said, the rose industry doesn't have the greenest track record. Roses are often sprayed heavily with pesticides and picked by exploited field workers.

To indulge mom's senses without a side order of chemicals and illegal human rights, we turned to John Nevado, president of Nevado Roses, an organic and fair trade rose farm in Ecuador, for some rose-buying tips.

1. Buy locally grown roses from your neighborhood nursery. This will spare the planet the added emissions from shipping flowers from an online retailer.

2. Speak up and ask for organically grown blooms. This will keep toxic chemicals out of mom's home-and out of the earth.

3. Ensure that your roses come from an ethical provider by looking for environmental or Fair Trade certifications such as Transfair or Veriflora.

4. If you are unable to find organically grown or Fair Trade roses close to home, find them online at Organic Style or Organic Bouquet. The roses arrive conveniently arrive at mom's front door, and you will have supported a socially responsible company.
