Last week, I wrote a post called "How to Reclaim a Kitchen Sink." In the article, I briefly cover removing a garbage disposal in order to remove the sink. Perhaps I put the cart before the horse and the (chicken behind the eggs. Removing a garbage disposal isn't that complicated, but it does warrant an in-depth explanation. Here are the instructiosn for garbage-disposal reclamation.)
Start by turning off the water. Then turn off the electricity. You can choose to turn off the electricity and water to the room or to the entire house. Whatever you are comfortable with. I won’t judge you. You will need a bucket, a screwdriver, some pliers and a wrench for this project.
- Unplug the disposal's power cord.
- Use the pliers or the wrench to remove the slip fittings on the P trap. That’s the little u-shaped pipe. Then remove P trap.
- Dump the contents of the P trap into the bucket. Check for valuables. Watch out for spiders.
- Remove discharge tube. That's the tube that connects the disposal to the P trap.
- Remove dishwasher drain tube with pliers. (if applicable)
- Loosen the screws on the garbage disposal mount.
- Rotate garbage disposal counterclockwise to release it from the mount.
- Take the screwdriver. Remove the electrical plate from the disposal.
- Underneath the plate, there should be a clamp that holds the cable. Loosen that clamp.
- Remove cable.
- Take garbage disposal outside. Hold it above your head with the sunset at your back.
