Radishes have a lovely spicy flavor and a fabulous crunch that is totally unexpected and very different from most veggies. I remember as a child my dad snacking away on them as if they were candy. One day I grabbed one out of his hand to try and pretty much gasped at the unexpected flavor. "Yuck!" I screamed. But today I have grown to love these little root veggies.
Now is a great time to plant them down south. You should make sure that the soil is about 65 degrees before planting them. Use your fresh compost to give these guys some really nice soil and take care to plant them where the sun shines.
Tips on Planting Radishes:
- Plant seeds an inch deep and three inches apart and seedlings 6 inches apart.
- Choose a site that gets at least six hours of sun light a day.
- Interplant them with lettuce if you like but don't plant them near fennel.
- Radishes can handle minor frost, in fact it's actually good for them.
- Till the soil when planting to ensure that nothing can disrupt their growth.
6. Pick when they look ready to eat but don't keep them in the soil too long as they will deteriorate very fast.
Make an Easy Curried Roast Vegetable Salad with Radishes The watermelon radish has an unexpected bright pink color when you cut into it and the dull brownish skin gave no indication of the beauty found within. This recipe is a great way to use watermelon radishes or any variety of radishes.
