If you're not keen on forking over a fiver every time you need to replace the filter on your Brita, here's an Instructable that shows you how you can easily reuse the spent filter for far less.

In fact, user IAMSatisfied says, " If you can refill a salt shaker, then you should be able to refill a Brita, PUR, or other-brand water-pitcher cartridge." You just have to carve out a good-sized hole on the top of your filter, so you can deposit fresh activated carbon inside, and then seal with a polyethylene plug.

One caveat from IAMSatisfied, which should play an important role in deciding if this is penny-pinching hack is for you:

First off, let me say that this filter makeover is NOT intended to do ALL that the Brita filters claim to do, but just do what the activated carbon portion performs, which meets my needs very well. ...

Everyone should have their water tested and judge from the test results what type of filtration you NEED. Be intelligent. Why pay for something you don't use? Use your own judgment as to whether a carbon-only filter is suitable for your situation.
