Sure, the label may say non-toxic, but those funky fumes tell our noses otherwise. Banish any uncertainty by kneading your kids' play dough right in your kitchen. Throw in a small manual pasta maker, a pizza cutter, a butter knife, and an assortment of cookie cutters to create an inexpensive play-dough factory. (Chances are you'll be able to find these items and more at a flea market, swap meet, or Goodwill store on the cheap.)
All you need to do is mix together some flour, salt, cream of tartar, and vegetable oil. You can add a bit of food coloring, Kool-Aid powder, or beet and carrot juices to give those beige dollops some zing-or even mix in grated citrus peel or vanilla essence for an aromatic punch. To store after play, place in an airtight container or Ziploc bag. Traditional Play Dough
