While Helen Suh Macintosh over at TreeHugger debates the merits of manufactured logs over conventional cut firewood-and whether the planet will be better off if you chose a different heating method entirely-we've rustled up directions for making your own tree-free Java Log from recycled coffee grounds, vegetable wax, and molasses.

Retailing at around $3.50 a pop, the original Java Log was the first fire log made from coffee grounds. The real McCoy is also said to burn brighter and hotter than sawdust logs, while producing 85 percent less carbon monoxide than traditional firewood does. ::Instructables
