Keep mud where it belongs-outdoors. Raj Chaudhry of Mother Earth News demonstrates how anyone can make a handy boot scraper by welding or bolting together three pieces of angle iron. Placed by your back porch or barn door-or anywhere where it won't be tripped over by people or critters-this simple device will eliminate rainy day mud and muck from your work and garden boots.

One abundant and often free source of scrap angle iron, says Chaudhry, is old bed frames. His design comprises two angle-iron legs, 1 1/2 inches wide by 15 inches long, as well as one bar-stock cross piece, 1 1/2 inches wide by 9 inches long. (All of the metal is three-sixteenth inches thick.) You can then trim the mild steel to stake-like points, using a chop saw, angle grinder with cut-off wheel, cutting torch, or hacksaw. ::Mother Earth News
