My grandfather kept cats. He had a barn full of them. Everyday Grandpa would mosey out to the barn to feed his untamed band of mewling barn cats. He had so many cats that he bought dry cat food in bulk and kept it in a crate that he had built himself. He would scoop the cat food out with a modified two-liter bottle.
Grandpa passed on this technique to my father who used it to feed his dog, and I am passing on this technique to you. This technique is a great way to reuse plastic bottles and repurpose them into something that can be reused a great deal, and in the event that the scoop breaks, you can just recycle it with your other plastic
What you'll need:
- Two-Liter Bottle
- Knife
- Duct Tape
Step One
Take the two-liter bottle and the knife. Start your cut just below the middle of the bottle on the top side. (Always cut away from yourself.)
Step Two
Cut downwards towards the bottom of the bottle. Try to cut at about a forty-five degree angle. You want the bottom edge to jut out further than the top edge.
Step Three
Once the bottle bottom is severed, toss the unusable portion in the recycle bin. Take one strip of duct tape and wrap it around the bottle's neck. One piece should suffice to both tape the cap shut and to create a grip. If your tape isn't wide enough to do both, feel free to use two strips.
Step Four
Get scooping. These scoops are great for animal feed, snow, seed or anything small that you need moved in bulk.
Note: A half-gallon milk jug makes a good alternative scoop. It can be fashioned the same way, and it has a built-in handle.
