Keeping your trash in your sight and in your mind helps to keep it out of the landfill.

It was discovered on Wasted, that 50 percent of a New York City's household trash was actually recyclable. It turns out that they didn’t want to venture down into their apartment complex’s basement or deal with potential “bugs” in the dark. Convenience strikes again!

One way to defeat the temptation to trash your recyclables is to downgrade your trash service.

You can downgrade your trash pickup service, by requesting a smaller curbside trash bin or less frequent pickup. Some waste management companies even offer a very inexpensive once-a-month trash pickup plan; those plans still pickup recycling weekly, because they actually make money from selling your reusable and recyclable waste. Limited space for your trash in your home pre-landfill, and keeping your waste in sight and in mind for a longer period of time, helps to attach discipline to your ideals.

For those of you who already provide your trash can a tiny offering each week, may as well quit subsidizing your wasteful neighbors’ wasteful habits if your waste management service offers a downgrade.
