Here's a green tip that hearkens back to the days of ole. Okay, not that old—after all, Americans have only come to consider the clothes dryer a necessity over the last few decades. Today, we're going to take a look at the oh-so-simple matter what do once it's out. And it's a one word solution. Ready?

Clotheslines.

That's right, use clotheslines instead of your dryer, and you'll cut your residential energy costs by 5 percent. That's nothing to sneeze at—it can add up to savings of over a hundred bucks a year.

And all you need to do is make a one-time purchase of that simple, beautiful, much-neglected line of rope—the clothesline. Yes, they're still available (they're not that antiquated) and sold at department stores—even Amazon sells clotheslines. And each one costs around ten bucks.

Using a clothesline could contribute to big energy savings—if everyone opted for the clothesline, and we saved 5 percent of residential energy across nation it'd be a pretty stunning (and really green) achievement.

Project Laudrylist

The issue is important enough that a non-profit organization, called Project Laudrylist, has made it a mission to advocate the clothesline—it's a classic case of every bit helps. If you're already a clothesline user, check in for some communal support—and if not, check out their site anyways. They've got celebrity clothesline info (yes, you read correctly), tons of tips and suggestions, and they dispel myths about clotheslines.
