You can bid farewell to unnecessary waste, and hello to cleaner air, by using an electrostatic furnace filter in lieu of disposable fiberglass screens, according to The Daily Green. Throwaway filters only remove about 10 percent to 40 percent of pollutants from the air, while electrostatic models-which also happen to be permanent and easy to wash-siphon off about 88 percent of the nastiness, including bacteria, mold, viruses, and pollen.

No matter which option you choose, remember to clean or replace your filter each month during the heating season, because dirty or clogged filters can reduce both energy efficiency and air quality. (Learn how to clean and replace a furnace filter at eHow.) And while you're at it, make sure your furnace is clean, lubricated, and properly tuned, so it stays in tip-top shape for many winters to come. ::The Daily Green
