On Wa$ted, we learned of fraternity brothers who were wasting a lot of energy by using space heaters to heat their personal space. While space heaters fulfill their mission statement, they are enormous energy wasters.

Here are some easy ways to heat your personal space :

  1. Wear a sweater! A $20 sweater can save hundreds of dollars a year in heating costs. If it is cold outside and you are indoors wearing shorts and a t-shirt, then you are not dressed right for the season. It is not practical to create an opposite season indoors. It is better to dress for the season and then use supplemental energy for the rest.
  2. Hang out with friends and family in the same room. The more body heat gathered, the less artificial heat is needed to supplement the room. When a heater IS needed, more people benefit and less energy is used.
  3. Do jumping jacks and cartwheels. Being active raises the body temperature and the cooler air in the room becomes refreshing instead of uncomfortable.
  4. Go to bed earlier than usual. Many mammals hibernate in the winter in order to conserve body heat. We are mammals. While it may not be practical for us to hibernate, we can lie in our beds under our down covers. It is a good setting to read, write, dream, and even get some work done.
  5. Get in the Kitchen. When you or others are cooking, hang out in or near the kitchen. It’s already hot in there.
