Annabelle Gurwitch, star of Wa$sted, gives out some big-hearted advice in this Planet Green Holiday Highlight. She's out to make sure that we don't waste excessive resources this year. Do you know how much energy is spent creating, transporting and disposing of all that holiday cheer? Annabelle knows. What's a better gift to give? Annabelle knows that as well. You'd better check out her video.

Something that you can do this holiday season to reduce your carbon footprint is to shop locally. Whether you are celebrating in Poughkeepsie, Sheboygan, Walla Walla, or any other city that has a ridiculous name, you can find local shops where you can purchase thoughtful gifts.

"Why?" you may ask. This is why. The more weight you cram onto a plane—excessive gifts and packages are heavy—the more gasoline the airplane consumes. This is also true for a car or bus or whatever. Your airplane may take you across the country or across the globe. The farther you fly, the more gasoline that five-pound fruitcake for Aunt Jill is going to consume. You can save fuel by not hauling all that holiday swag with you and shopping in the area that you are celebrating in.

Sure, there are going to be some instances where you'll find a one-of-a-kind-item near your faraway home. You shouldn't worry about taking a few gifts on the plane, especially nice ones. But you can really cut down on carbon emissions by shopping locally. This will make your holidays all the merrier.
