In this Planet Green Holiday Highlight, Holter Graham, star of TV's Wa$ted roots out a better way of dealing with used Christmas trees. His suggestion, replant them. Check out the video if you want to know more.
Over thirty million Christmas trees are sold a year. That's only in the United States. That makes for a lot of landfill fodder. Besides Hotler's suggestion, there are other ways to dispose of Christmas trees. You can mulch them. You can compost them or you can turn them over and let your city dispose of them. They also make decent firewood.
Composting a tree yourself might be a real hassle. You can't just toss the tree onto the heap and forget about it. You have to cut it up in to itty-bitty shavings and compost it bit by bit.
Mulching a tree might be easier if you have a wood shredder. Just shred the wood and put the shredded bits in your mulch bin. Use the mulch to keep moisture in your garden and weeds out.
Most cities have a tree-disposal program of some sort. Check your municipality's website or local offices. They will be able to give you specifics.
Christmas trees can also be used as firewood. Cut the tree up into fireplace-friendly chunklets. Let the pieces dry. Don't burn green wood! When the pieces are sufficiently dry, toss them in the fireplace for some late-winter cheer.
