I once heard it called garden therapy and it's really just that, therapy. It's as good for you as it is for your garden. And this therapy is much less expensive than going to a therapist, especially if you don't overbuy when it comes to gardening supplies. Even if you're buying for your organic garden, consumption is consumption and in the end the less that you buy the better off the planet will be. Also, when you buy supplies, take care of them, clean them often, store them inside so that they won't rust. That way you'll get the most for your money and you won't have to replace your goods so often. Make sure that you bring your garden hoses and such in during the winter so that they don't freeze and become damaged goods.
Here's what you'll need for the upcoming season:
- Good compost
You certainly don't need to buy this at all. Make your own compost. But either way it is essential to being a successful organic gardener. - Hand trowel
You really need to have one of these for most of your planting, especially the smaller seedlings that you'll be planting for spring. Trowels are necessary for planting the majority of your smaller annuals as well as herbs and such. They are just an easy access tool that you need on hand. - Digging Fork
Mulching is crucial to organic gardening. It protects the plants from insects, rodents, the sun, and the cold. A digging fork is the easiest way to move mulch. Make sure that you purchase a digging fork not a pitchfork. It should have four prongs, the perfect tool for moving around mulch and dirt very easily. - Rake
While some organic gardeners choose to let leaves decompose in the garden instead of clearing them out, I think that a rake can be very necessary. They are important for removing the leaves from your perennials when preparing your garden for spring. - Pruners
Pruning in the off season is an easy way to awaken your plants for the spring. It allows the branches of your trees to grow more successfully. It's a great organic way to keep things blooming.
