Many ecological forecasters portend that water will be the next oil in terms of scarcity. Although water makes up the majority of our planet, freshwater makes up a tiny fraction of the whole with a great percentage of that freshwater tied up in the polar icecaps. This doesn't spell doom for our planet. New technologies and a change in our environmental habits will probably stem the tide of runaway water prices. One of those new habits is classically known as, "wasting not and wanting not." Renovation Nation is a proponent of this habit.
One of the ways to conserve water is by harvesting the rain. Many renovators are using a drainpipe that diverts rainwater from their gutters into storage tanks. These renovators turn around and use the water for irrigation purposes, eliminating the need to waste precious drinking water on the yard.
Many of the people featured on the show have "lavish" irrigation tanks, but a kit that harvests rainwater doesn't have to be a huge expense. I've seen kits online for under thirty dollars. These kits usually consist of a barrel connected to the gutter by a tube. They look fairly easy to assemble and operate.
Water is cheap. Let's keep it that way by conserving it.
