A study at the University of Bonn in Germany found that washing dishes with a machine, in some cases, is actually greener than washing dishes with your hands. But some of us cannot afford dishwashers or live in apartments too small to fit one. How can we, the dishwasherless, clean our dishes in an eco-friendly manner?

  1. Use Eco-Friendly Dishwashing Soap
Greenhome.huddler.com has released a list of 5 green dishwashing soaps. These are the five:
    1. Seventh Generation Free and Clear Dishwashing Liquid
    2. Dishmate Dishwashing Liquid
    3. Trader Joe's Next to Godliness Soap
    4. Biokleen Dishwashing Liquid
    5. Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Handwashing Dish Soap

  2. Use less water.
You don't need to fill the sink up to the brim. A half-sink full of water is enough, even less if possible.

  3. The Dippy-Cup Technique
Fill one glass with soap and water. Get a scrub brush. Dip the brush into the glass. Scrub dish. Repeat.

  4. One Rinse to Rule Them All
Instead of rinsing off every dish one and at a time, it may be a good idea to rinse the entire dish rack at once. Once you've washed the dishes, give the dishes a quick once-over with the spray nozzle to remove soap.

  5. Use your shower water to wash dishes.
Don't do your dishes in the shower. Instead, after you've cleaned your hair and body and the majority of that soap is gone, plug the drain. Finish your shower. Put the leftover hot water in a pan. Boil it. Put water in sink. Do dishes.

  • Bonus: You can combine some of these tips. Rinse your dishes off with shower water. Or Fill a dippy-cup with shower water. Or Dippy-Cup + Green Dish Soap.
