Tasty and toxin-free: organic produce is better for both you and the planet. Unfortunately, green goodness often comes with a higher price tag.
The G-Word gave us the lowdown on asparagus, a veggie with built-in protection against bad-for-you, bad-for-the-earth synthetic toxins like pesticides and fertilizers. Thin-skinned fruits and other types of produce aren't as innately protected.
When it comes to budgeting for healthy food, the skin should set your standard. If you have to choose organic versus non-organic, spend your money on thin-skinned fruits and veggies since they tend to have higher pesticide residues.
According to the Environmental Working Group, produce with highest residue count include the following:
- Apples
- Berries
- Peaches
- Grapes
- Imported grapes
- Bell peppers
- Celery
- Nectarines
- Cherries
- Pears
- Spinach
- Lettuce
- Potatoes
On the flip side, produce with the lowest pesticide residue count include:
- Bananas
- Avocados
- Pineapples
- Mangoes
- Asparagus
- Sweet peas (frozen)
- Sweet corn (frozen)
- Kiwifruit
- Cabbage
- Broccoli
- Papaya
Clip and save these lists in your wallet for quick and easy reference, and put your pennies to work for your health.
