Whizzing through the dimly lit streets of Los Angeles, the Midnight Ridazz embody an inspiring example of energy-free fun. Taking back L.A.'s typically traffic-choked streets, these cycling enthusiasts use nothing but their own physical energy to power through, as seen in the recent The G Word profile of the club. Impressive.
But maybe, like me, you're not compelled to whiz through darkened streets in search of energy-free fun. I tend towards something a bit more... cozy.
On March 29th, my fiancé and I hunkered down for Earth Hour, an idea that started in Australia but went global this year. The premise is simple: power down for one hour, including lights, TV, stereo, stove…anything on the grid. As we sat around the table with only a candle, we found ourselves drifting into a deeper conversation then we’d had in awhile.
Here's our idea: why not make Earth Hour a weekly event? We guarantee that these 60 carbon-free, quality minutes will virtually fly by:
Hump Day Hush: Plan for a Wednesday. What better way to catch up on your loved ones' lives then halfway through your overscheduled week?
- All-In Oratory: Go to a used book store and buy a ragged, tattered book with tons of character. Check out America's Book Shelf, a tree-saving, Netflix-style service where you'll share your old books and borrow others. Take turns reading a chapter aloud every week.
- Play a Game: Whether it's backgammon, Xeko (a cool kids card game centered on saving endangered animals), or poker, stock up on candles according to event. Order soy-based candles in advance for the greenest and longest-lasting flicker possible.
- Celebrate: Sign up for Earth Hour 2009 and share a weekly hour of non-power with global citizens this March!
