You may have noticed in the second episode of Greensburg that there’s a lot of talk about building green homes—we’re even treated to a look at one in mid-construction. And they’re planning on building many more. So what exactly is a green home?
A “Green Home” is a term for a house (or condo, or apartment, cave, anything) that’s built with sustainable building practices, eco-friendly architecture, and allows for green practices like recycling and using solar power. Each green home is different.
Sustainable building practices include using recycled materials, preventing erosion, and using local materials when possible to cut down on transportation costs. Green architecture considers the environment around the house to make it with built-in energy saving devices, like energy efficient windows that allow maximum sun in to heat a room.
And what can you do if you want to green a home you’ve already got, or don’t know where to start? These green home improvement tips are a good place to get started. From something as easy as installing to as dedicated as installing solar paneling to cut energy costs, there are plenty of ways you can upgrade your home to green.
