Green Home Renovation: Ponder the Growth of the Green Movement (Video)

David Gottfried discusses his plans to write the sequel to Greed to Green, the story of the founding of USGBC.

Fri Nov 21 15:00:00 GMT 2008

This is part of a series of video blog posts about green architecture and construction leading up to Greenbuild, the U.S. Green Building Council's annual conference. Planet Green is a Silver sponsor of this year's event, which will be held in Boston November 19-21.

So here we are sitting in my new regenerative office, and one of the things I hope to do here is write the sequel to my book, Greed to Green. This is a memoir of the founding of the U.S. Green Building Council and it's a 20-year story of a segment of my life, spanning from a young and eager real estate developer in the go-go 1980s to founding and growing the U.S. and World Green Building Councils.

It's fascinating to marvel how fast the green sector and movement is growing, and I hope as I write here, I'll be able to bring forward all the growth that we've seen. Greed to Green was finished five years ago, and it talks about how—at the time—the USGBC was at 2,500 organization members, and our Greenbuild Conference expected 5,000 attendees.

This past year in Chicago we had 25,000, and President Clinton was our keynote speaker.* Already our membership has grown to over 17,000 organizations.

The World Green Building Council that had just gotten started when I finished this book; the organization now has more than 50 green building councils forming all over the world.

*Editor's note: This year's conference, which ends today, had more than 26,000 attendees. Check out some of TreeHugger's coverage of the Greenbuild expo here.

David Gottfried started Regenerative Ventures and its consulting arm, WorldBuild in 1995, after founding the U.S. Green Building Council in 1993. He is the author of Greed to Green, and is internationally acknowledged as one of the foremost founders of the global green building movement.
