We have been listing the things you should do to prepare your home for winter, in order of bang for your buck, as determined by the Rocky Mountain Institute, which figured out the cost in dollars per ton of carbon saved for each investment you make in time and money. First and most effective was a programmable thermostat; then stopping air leaks; now we have a really easy one, that costs only $ 10.07 for every ton of carbon saved. You can buy kits at hardware stores or the big boxes like Home Depot or Lowes, that come with straightforward instructions.

Alliance Energy has a graphic demonstration of it at ::Alliant Energy, and you can link to the US Department of Energy's instructions :: here. It doesn't get much better than this; a kit costs twenty-five bucks, it probably takes less than an hour to do, and you save $14.95 per year in energy costs.
