Philadelphia Architect Charlie Szoradi and real estate agent Cynthia Szoradi spent three years converting a '50s bungalow into an eco-sustainable home and learned a lot in the process. "We have done so much research over the past three years that we wanted to share it," they said. A recent addition to their Web site is a return on investment (ROI) table that they say is first to offer ROI ranking tools for homeowners. It is not, of course-the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) did it years ago, and we based our "Green Your Home for Winter" series on that. Additionally, Charlie's table gives financial savings but does not list carbon-dioxide savings for each action as the RMI does.
Because it is newer, however, the numbers are more reflective of today's fuel prices, the savings now are even more outstanding than we predicted. For example, where the RMI predicted savings of $58.10 per year by installing a programmable thermostat, Charlie predicts $180. Where we had a $14.95 saving by installing a water heater blanket, the newer number is double that.
