One helpful way of moving towards a more eco-friendly lifestyle is to take a look at which steps of your daily routine could use a little greening. And one fine place to start is with your (hopefully) daily shower.

Now, if you really want to get serious and start saving some major drainage, you can opt for a navy shower and rinse off in two quick bursts, while recycling some of the water to boot. But for most of us, that's a bit on the extreme side. So start with these simple pointers, and keep them in mind tomorrow morning when you hop behind the curtain.

  1. Speaking of the curtain, start off by making sure you don't have a PVC, or vinyl shower curtain—it's been discovered that the bleed a plethora of potentially dangerous chemicals into the drain.

  2. Limit your shower time. We know everyone loves a good long shower, but there's really no reason you need to be having one every day—and you'll be saving tons of gallons of water. Literally. It turns out that Americans typically use 2.5 gallons of water a minute when they shower.

  3. Have your soaps, shampoo, and moisturizers organized and ready to go. This'll be helpful in achieving #2.

  4. Consider installing a low flow showerhead—these seriously restrict the amount of wasted water.
