Many homeowners who decide to undergo a renovation are choosing newer, greener alternatives over traditional building and design, because they realize the positive effects it will have in the future. Not only are they creating a more sustainable lifestyle, but they will be paying tremendously less on utilities for years to come. However, there are still those who believe that going green with their renovation will simply cost too much. Here are a few tips that you can use to save money through green renovations.

Choose Hardwood Flooring
Choosing hardwood flooring improves the air quality in your home, because you are getting rid of all that dirt, dust, allergens, and possibly even mold that can be lurking in your lush carpet. Many companies offer green hardwood options, but you're likely to find that there is a hardwood floor hiding under your carpet when the carpet is completely removed. Save some cash by reusing that wood if it is salvageable. You may be able to simply sand it down, refinish, and top it off with a water based sealer, just as Monica Ramone did on Greenovate. If it isn't in good enough shape, there are even companies that can reshape the wood planks and fill in where needed, to be able to salvage it.

Know Your Climate
Looking for a green, outdoor make over? Take the time to understand the climate in your area, and what kind of plants grow naturally there. From there, you can easily put in trees and flora that are native to your area and thrive in your area's weather -- reducing the costs of purchasing as well as the upkeep and maintenance of them.

There are plenty of small things that can be done to save money on a green renovation, it just takes a little more planning and an open mind!
