Everyone likes new things, except for my grandparents. They gave up enjoying new things ten years ago. They sit in tattered chairs, watching wretched reruns, drinking decade-old Tab soda out of glasses that commemorate the Bicentennial of the United States.

Although they didn't mean to, my grandparents have gone green. By extending the lifespan of their goods, they have managed to save energy and resources.

Let's pretend that you own a hat. You drop your hat. Now you want to replace the hat at the speed of its own dropping. You shouldn't do that. It's wasteful and wastefulness is bad for the environment. It is important to learn how to extend the life of your possessions. Here are a few simple tips:

Your shoes may stink. Look. I don't know you. You don't know me, but I am acquainted with feet. I have a pair of my own, and my feet often produce a fetid odor that can wilt flowers like a cartoon skunk. The ungreen amongst us might toss their pungent Pumas for a brand-new pair of scentless sneakers. That's wasteful in so many ways. It is wiser, cheaper and better for the environment to rub a little tea tree oil into your shoes in order to remove the offending odor. This will keep your shoes stench free until the next time you go sockless.

Dusty appliances squander more energy. The fridge, all innocent-looking, covered in magnets and Crayola art work, is the biggest energy dump in the house. Make sure to clean off those refrigeration coils. It can help you cut down on energy costs and waste. Also, any appliance that has an air filter will use more energy if that filter is dirty. Clean those filthy filters at once.

Clearing away dryer lint can save energy. To save further energy, rinse the lint catcher. Put a dab of dish soap on a wet wash cloth and dampen the catcher. This will save energy and your clothes will come out smelling like a meadow or at least chemically similar to a meadow.

These are just a few tips on how to elongate the existence of your gear. The are thousands more. Use these tips. It will help you conserve money and the planet. The power is in your hands and on your feet.
