"Rain barrels are smart for a couple reasons," writes Chris Tackett of TreeHugger.com "They save you money by reducing the amount of clean water you have to buy from the city to water your plants. And they help the environment by reducing the demand for clean water from the city, which requires energy to process."
According to the Practical Environmentalist "Plants love naturally `soft' rain water, which is also free of chlorine and other chemicals. If you install even a couple rain barrels in your yard, you'll store enough water for your garden, and you can use the water from the tap for what it's supposed to be for: drinking!"
"Even if you only use the rain barrel water for a percentage of the water you use around the outside of your house, doing so will help reduce your consumption," adds Tackett.
Here's a helpful video for those planning to build a rain barrel. And don't forget to keep the kids involved.
