If you don't know where to start on the journey to go green, you certainly aren't alone. The Poisler family from the Grandma Knows Best Episode of Wa$ted! was lost too. But with Annabelle's and Holter's help, she is following the Go Green plan below applicable to many of you at home too.
The Poisler Family Go Green Plan:
1. Eat and Cook the Eco-Friendly Way
The Poisler family changed their old cooking habits from not-so-green to eco-fabulous by using local, organic produce. Their old habit of eating frozen foods—non-organic ones at that—used up a lot of energy. Now they've even started to grow their own vegetables at home.
2. Prevent Landfill Waste by Recycling
Instead of throwing out their electronics in the trash, the Poislers began disposing of e-wasted responsibly at the local dump or through special e-waste pickups. They also used Freecycle to give away items instead of trashing them.
Tip: It's helpful to learn which plastic numbers you can recycle and how. Read our Know Your Recyclable Plastics by Number Guide.
3. Improve Water and Energy Efficiency
The Poisler family started using an airtap from Eco Answers US to insulate their water heater. They alsotheir old, wasteful appliances for energy efficient ones. They recycled their old appliances for parts. Green Demolitions picked up, provided recycling drop-off and replaced the Poisler's appliances with energy-efficient ones.
More Ways the Poisler's Went Green:
- They installed a kitchen recycling center that has easy compartments for paper plastic and a can crush for aluminum cans.
- They started using Mode's All-in-One Recycling Center from Verde Home Products Inc. to organize their recycling.
- To start growing vegetables at home, they used TerraCycle's Seed Starter and Composite Garden Raised Bed from Scenery Solutions.
