Both getting to work and our actual work are not always as green as we'd like them to be. Maybe the first step toward re-imagining how we earn a living is to re-invent the way we commute. For starters, there is Planet Green's "How to Go Green: Commuting."
Top Tips for Greening Your Commute
Don't Drive: You could walk. You could ride your bike. You could choose public transportation. Each of which will reduce or eliminate your need for a car, will decrease the eco-damage of your commute, and put you in a better position to meet and greet your fellow humans face to face, sans windshield and car horn.
Work From Home: What if your commute consisted of ten steps from your bedroom to your home office? No work clothes, no traffic, no nosy cubicle mates, and a drastically lighter environmental impact. Telecommuting, whenever and wherever possible, rules.
Green Your Car: For work commutes that currently require driving, there are measures that can be taken to lessen your impact, e.g. keep you car well-maintained, drive a hybrid, drive slower, and get yourself into a car pool.
Did You Know?
- Number of days per year that the average Canadian spends commuting: 12
- Americans spend 8 billion hours per year stuck in traffic
- The US consumes 25% of the world's oil though it only accounts for 4% of the world's population.
