Pinpointing and stoppering up the source of household leaks will not only save you some cash, but it'll also prevent mold and mildew from establishing a foothold in your home, a situation that can lead to rot, structural damage, paint flaking, and myriad health problems. (Find out how to check for leaks in one of our previous posts.)
Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores can cause allergic reactions, resulting in fever-type symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. In addition, exposure to mold can also irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs, as well as trigger asthma attacks.
Because the key to mold control is keeping moisture in check, cleaning up mold without fixing the water problem will not deter the nefarious fungi from launching a renewed attack. Learn more about mold cleanup, and whether you need to ring up a professional, at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Web site.
